Trade Application Notes

British Standard 5-065 sits within our British Standard 2660 Paint Colour Chart, mixed fresh to order using Lechler binders and colourants. The system is designed so that aerosols and tins can be ordered again later for touch ins, snagging and follow on visits without the colour drifting.

  • Formats: 400 ml aerosols available in 1K (ready to use) and full 2K, plus our 2K Air Dry option. 2K Air Dry gives you two pack performance that cures in air, at a gentler price point than traditional 2K, which many contractors find ideal for day to day work. We also offer 1 litre tins, touch up pots and touch up pens for detail areas.
  • Finishes: A choice of matt, satin, semi gloss and full gloss so you can mirror existing schemes or meet a specific client brief and maintenance plan.
  • Surface preparation: For the most reliable result we recommend degreasing, lightly abrading to a uniform key and carefully removing dust. Please select a primer that suits both the substrate and the environment.
  • Masking and protection: Nearby glass, brickwork, signage and ground surfaces benefit from simple masking and sheeting. This keeps overspray under control and helps reduce clean up time.
  • Application control: The vari nozzle cap can be adjusted to a wider or narrower fan pattern. This makes it easier to work up to edges, manage tight areas and keep overspray to a minimum.
  • Overspray awareness: On external projects it helps to think about wind direction and foot traffic. Temporary screens and a clear working zone make application calmer on live sites.
  • Weather window: Apply to clean, dry surfaces and avoid conditions where rain or condensation are likely. Please follow the temperature and humidity guidance in the product data sheet.
  • Recoat and curing: Several lighter coats with the stated flash off time usually give a smoother, more even finish. Allow the coating to fully cure before subjecting it to heavy cleaning or impact.
  • Working with 2K and 2K Air Dry: These products are for professional use and should be applied with suitable PPE and good ventilation. Mix accurately, respect pot life and dispose of waste materials responsibly. Many users choose 2K Air Dry where they want a two pack upgrade on durability without committing to the cost of full 2K on every job.
  • Equipment: Aerosols generally behave best when stored at room temperature and shaken thoroughly before use. Tins can be applied using compliant spray equipment or with a fine foam roller and brush for edges.
  • Coverage and appearance: Light, even passes allow the film to build gradually, helping to avoid runs and dry spray patches and giving a more consistent sheen.
  • Aftercare: Protect freshly coated surfaces from tape pull, impact and aggressive wash down until the coating has had time to harden. Simple, mild cleaning products are usually enough for routine maintenance.
  • Repeat orders: Batch details can be recorded so that future top ups are mixed back to the same colour and finish, helping return visits to feel straightforward and predictable.

Used with the correct primer this system can suit many common substrates, including metal, correctly prepared plastics and timber. The aim is a smooth, dependable finish with good adhesion and stable colour under normal service conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

British Standard 5-065 Aerosol Spray Paint is a custom-mixed colour from our British Standard 2660 Paint chart, available as:

  • 1K aerosol/tin: ready to use; general purpose.
  • 2K aerosol/tin: integrated hardener for higher chemical/abrasion resistance.
  • 2K Air-Dry: 2K performance with non-isocyanate hardener for easier handling.

Finishes: Matt 0%, Satin 30%, Semi 60%, Full Gloss 90%. 2K aerosols are supplied as Acrylic Enamel only.

  • Clean/degrease: remove oils, silicones and residues (use panel-wipe; lint-free cloths).
  • Key the surface: typical aerosol prep is P400–P600 (plastics/metals), vacuum then tack-rag.
  • Primers: plastic adhesion for plastics/uPVC; etch/anti-corrosive for bare metals; sealers/primers for wood; dedicated systems for glass/fibreglass.

Correct priming vastly improves adhesion, opacity and long-term durability.

  • Spray distance: ~15–25 cm; maintain a constant angle and speed.
  • Technique: light, even passes with ~50% overlap; build film gradually.
  • Flash-off between light coats: 1K ~5–10 mins; 2K ~10–15 mins (conditions dependent).
  • Nozzle control: use the vari-nozzle (wide/narrow) to suit area and reduce overspray.

Always test on a small area to validate settings before full application.

  • 1K: recoat ~10–15 mins; typical handling cure ~30 mins.
  • 2K: recoat ~20–30 mins; touch-dry ~40 mins; full cure ~24–48 hrs.

Temperature, airflow and humidity significantly affect all timings—verify on your substrate.

  • Coverage guide: ~2 m² per coat from a 400 ml aerosol on a smooth, primed substrate.
  • Typical passes: 2–4 light coats for uniform colour and gloss.
  • Film build: plan for ~20–40 µm DFT across the system; a light aerosol pass can deposit ~10–15 µm (approx.).

Heavily textured/porous surfaces and strong colour changes may require additional coats.

  • Use system-appropriate primers and clears from the same family where possible.
  • Avoid mixing dissimilar chemistries without testing; perform a small adhesion/solvent-rub test first.
  • Observe recoat windows to protect intercoat adhesion and gloss.

For detailed guidance, refer to the data sheets below.

  • Ambient: ideally 10–25 °C, RH < 75%, steady airflow; substrate temperature at least ~3 °C above dew point.
  • PPE: suitable respirator, gloves, eye protection; ensure excellent ventilation.

See data sheets: 1K · 2K/2K Air-Dry.

Please note: our paint is custom mixed and should be test-sprayed on a small, inconspicuous area before full application. We cannot accept responsibility for any colour difference once paint has been applied to your surfaces. If the colour is not accurate, please contact us to arrange a return.
